Letters from our teachers
Grade 5
May 2008
Classroom teacher: Mrs. Kathleen Puleo
Can it already be MAY? It seems as if we were just carving pumpkins, and here we are enjoying the flowers brought by April showers! Grade 5 has had a busy April. Even the kids are commenting on how time is flying by.

We began our month enjoying a new DVD of the Everglades on our SMART Board. Our wonderful Mr. Peruzzi brought it to us as a gift from Florida. A friend of his, whose son owns an airboat company, sent it along for us to watch and learn. It showed us up close the life patterns and habits of alligators and birds who inhabit the Everglades. Seeing it on the large screen made a BIG impression. Hand-drawn thank-you cards were sent along to show our appreciation.
The Beach Party was enjoyed by many of the fifth grade families. DJ Sarah Titus did her usual great job of getting everyone up on the dance floor and keeping them out there throughout the evening. Trivia questions, hula-hooping, and lots of good snacks made it a night to remember.

This month’s service project was a special one for us as we supported one of our favorite alumna, Katie Delorey, as she worked to raise money for her first Breast Cancer Walk. The fifth grade made a huge banner that was used when we took a whole-school picture to show our support for Katie. We will be keeping her and all the walkers in our prayers.

Our focus this month for Art was watercolors. If you have a chance to walk down the hall, you’ll think you’re in the Museum of Fine Arts or Monet’s Garden. The kids did a super job creating beautiful flowers and flowered umbrellas which now decorate our bulletin board, “Jesus Showers Us With Love.”

Jesus also showered these fifth graders with talent. They were absolutely wonderful in the Spring Show, Classical Crazies. Using their voices, dance moves, and musical instruments, they wowed the audience and their teacher! The end result was due to the work they did with Mrs. Howley during music class and time they put in on their own. Bravo!

It is amazing to see the changes in the kids since September. They have gotten taller and definitely smarter. They are flying through state capitals, 2-digit division, addition and subtraction of mixed numbers, and creative writing that would make you feel like you are in the destinations they described.
We are grateful to all who help make our school such a great place to learn and we are truly thankful for the people who volunteer their time, talent, and treasure, especially Mr. Sheehan and Mr. Peruzzi, who encourage us by their example. We say, “merci beaucoup” and “mille grazie.”
See you next month!
