Letters from our teachers
Grade 4
May 2008
Classroom teacher: Mrs. Sherry DiVito
This past month, Grade 4 students produced fantastic book reports on fiction books. Each student created a “book jacket” that displays many different features of the book, such as main ideas of each chapter, character information, biographical information about themselves, artwork, and analysis of the problems and solutions in the story. We are now ready to proceed with oral presentations to go along with these reports. The fourth grade students are fantastic presenters!
We are studying an exciting unit in Science on electricity and magnetism. We have experimented with static electricity and now are exploring current electricity. The students will be participating in several experiments exploring these concepts, including assembling simple circuits in class.
In art, the students have created an abstract illustration of spring. Watch for these visually exciting drawings in the hallway! In math class, the Grade 4 students have done remarkably well in their quest for mastering long division. We are now hard at work beginning fractions and are looking ahead to some geometry before the end of the year.
We have read stories in our reading book this spring about whales and how they communicate. This has us very excited for our end-of-the-year field trip — a New England Aquarium whale watch. We can only hope to see as many whales as we saw last year!
The students continue to work hard in Grade 4 as year-end approaches. They have accomplished a lot this year and are ready to make the big move upstairs!
Accomplishments for Grade 4 students this year include:
• Developed improved writing and proofreading skills
• Became accomplished oral presenters of their work
• Have shown great responsibility and positive attitude toward their work
• Conquered long division
• Worked cooperatively for science experiments
