Letters from our teachers

Grade 1
May 2008
Classroom teacher: Mrs. Elaine Santry

It is hard to believe that May is already here and the school year is almost over. I guess it’s true that time flies when you’re having fun!

Grade 1 gave a surprise party to grade 2 in honor of their First Holy Communion. Each student in grade 1 was partnered with a grade 2 student. Grade 1 made cards and bookmarks for their second grade friends. A fun time was had by all. We are looking forward to the May procession on May 22.

Grade 1 has been enjoying the book Charlotte’s Web. After we finished the book, we watched the movie and compared and contrasted the two. Charlotte had some very nice things to say about grade 1 students. You will see evidence of Charlotte’s writing on the wall outside grade 1.

Our new book for this month is Judy Moody Declares Independence. As Judy Moody visits the many stops on the Freedom Trail, we are viewing the historic sites on our SMART Board. One day we made tri-cornered hats to help us feel a part of the colonial days we were learning about in the story.

In science, we are studying the properties of matter and the changes in matter. We are also studying the life cycle of the butterfly, watching the daily growth of six caterpillars and waiting for each one of them to make their chrysalis. We are hoping that at the end of this two-week cycle, we will have six butterflies.

We are beginning to master our math facts. Our daily math facts sheet is completed in less than a minute. We have also begun double-digit addition and subtraction. On our SMART Board, we have found so many interactive programs to enrich our math curriculum. They aid us in reviewing many concepts, including time, place value, and double-digit addition.
